Claire wanted to be photographed in the ritual kindness of her husband Caleb brushing her hair.
“The experience we even better than the photos, which is saying something, because the photos are incredible. It was such a sweet thing to have Ashley show me how she sees me". - Claire
“We have lots of things like this….” Caleb said brushing Claire’s freshly washed hair.
“Like?” I asked
“Like rubbing feet, like snuggling…things she likes.”
What emotions/thoughts/feeling did you experience before your session?
Nervousness which I didn’t expect, but getting a text saying it’s normal to be nervous really helped.
What did you experience DURING our session?
Calmness and excitement and being taken care of.
If my friend were on the fence about hiring Ash I would tell them this:
Ash makes it SO easy. Just do it because you’re not going to get a better experience creating art. She’s amazing.
The banding (lines) at the bottom of the frame are a consequence of the chemical degradation of expired film.
FILM NOTES: On Shooting Expired Film
Last year Jon gifted me a big bag of expired medium format film to play with. Little did I know that one of my favorite film stocks was in that bag. Delta 3200 film is a light hungry, grainy wonder! I love shooting it and I love editing it.
While I originally imagined Lemme See in color I threw a roll of this 3200 film in my bag and at the end of my first session with Janessa I met this magical film. Those first few black and white frames set the tone for what Lemme See became expanding my original vision for the project.
Shooting expired film is a bit of a gamble so I certainly wouldn’t use it as the primary film for client work but shooting so much of it helped me see and understand that for myself AND make some interesting portraits.
FILM: Expired Ilford Delta 3200 film rated at 1000 ISO
